Welcome back to our mission of getting Tranmere in to the Premier League! In this update we have a chance of going on a cup run or two and a chance to put more pressure on league leaders Forest Green. We begin with our FA Cup game against Cheltenham…
Cheltenham – Home – FA Cup 2nd Round
Cheltenham opened the scoring after a mix up in our defence in the 16th minute. Cheltenham finished the game off before half time when Arthur got two in four minutes in what was a woeful half from us. I expected so much more from us and believed we would put up more of a fight. We came out better in the second half but they shut up shop and we couldn’t get a goal to try and kick on from.
York – Home – League – 2nd V 6th
A much better result for us but the game started slowly with rare chances for both teams. Bogle breaks the deadlock late on in the game and then Hickey wraps up the 3 points with a strike from inside the box just before full time. This win puts us top of the league as Forest Green lost their game!
York – Away – FA Trophy 1st Round
Another game against York in a week and another boring first 45 minutes of the game. We get the opening goal of the game which turned out to be the only goal and the goal to progress us in the cup when Wright finishes a nice team goal. Gorman gets sent off on the hour mark which put more pressure on us but we maintained our dominance on the game despite being down to 10 men.
The cup draw has been kind to us and has put us against Bradford Park Avenue away from the league below. It should be an expected win but it will still be a tough fight for us to keep the high standard and progress further in the cup.
Lincoln – Away – League – 5th V 1st
What a crazy game and a game where I possibly had every emotion. A lively opening few minutes of the game saw us go ahead in the second minute when Wynter scores a beautfiul free kick. Green doubled our lead not long before half time and we looked good for the win. Lincoln pull one back before we get our third with Mullin taking his chance. Lincoln got their second when Davies drops the ball from a cross in to his own goal. Ihiekwe gives away a penalty with 10 minutes to go which Lincoln convert to draw level. Lincoln then go on to get the winner in injury time when Arnold was to fast for our defence and slots it past the keeper.
Macclesfield – Home – League – 1st V 14th
Macclesfield gave us an advantage when one of their players got sent off in the 11th minute with a straight red. Green breaks the deadlock in the second half with a cool finish. Kent doubles our lead with 5 minutes to go with a nicely taken finish in the box for a defender.
Macclesfield – Away – League – 17th V 1st
We get off to a good start when Green opens the scoring in the 10th minute. Gorman gets our second goal of the game just after the hour mark and Green gets his brace and takes the 3 points home with us. A dominant performance and back to back wins against Macclesfield in a week to help our position at the top of the league.
Sutton – Home – League 1st V 12th
We got off to a bad start when Hughes gets sent off in the 29th minute with a second yellow after a silly tackle on one of their players which was the only real action in the first half apart from us opening the scoring with Wynter capitalizing on a defensive error and finishes from inside the box. Sutton pull level with about 20 minutes to go with a nice finish but it only lasted minutes before Hickey puts us back in front with a free kick in to the top corner. Gorman concedes a penalty late in to injury time which Sutton score from to take a share of the points.
Overall a good haul of points but I am annoyed at our performance in the FA Cup against Cheltenham and dropping points against Lincoln and Sutton.
We continue our cup run up next when we play Bradford Park Avenue and then we have some tough games against teams like Dagenham and Eastleigh.
We currently sit top of the league after Forest Green dropping points and us being able to take advantage of that and pick up the points. We need to start finishing games off and not letting teams back in and us dropping points. We are still in some good form though with the odd blip every now and then which is expected.
Devarn Green is still the main man for us despite him having a small dry spell for us which lasted 3 games! More players are beginning to chip in with goals which helps when players like Devarn have dry spells and we can still get the win.
The star player this week is Channing Campbell-Young. He consistently puts in a good performance for us and very rarely has less than a 7 match rating. He is way to good for us and could easily play at a higher level than what he is currently playing at. His stats don’t look the best but he is one the best right backs I have managed at lower levels. He can defend as well as contribute with assists and the odd goals.
Thanks for reading and I hope you are enjoying the save!
