We kick off our league campaign also we a cup game against the ‘mighty’ Leeds! Hopefully we can have a good start to the league and hold our own against the bigger teams in the league. All I am really aiming for this season is survival and then we can build on that and keep working up the leagues hopefully. We have brought in a few more players which I will show first before we go to the first game of the season.
We have brought in strikers along with a defender and a midfielder. The DoF has brought in Dowling and Walsh on season long loans. Dembele has come in as a back up to the two we have already got and is a better option than what we already had. Dowling is player who will be in our starting 11 on a regular basis as he is again better than what we had. We lacked strikers despite all our signings so we have brought in Ball & JCH who both have league experience which can only help. Walsh also comes in and will be a back up and will get experience with us.
Notts County – Away – League – 17th V 22nd
Comley gets our opener and a goal on hos debut when Adams squares it to him in the box and he curls it in to the corner. Notts County had some good chances before half time to get back in to the game. Notts County did get back in to the game 10 minutes in to the second half when we couldn’t clear our box and Stead smashes it to home to take a share of the points. Robinson missed a golden chance at the end to get the win but it went straight at the keeper.
Leeds – Home – EFL Cup 1st Round
We get the opening goal of the game against a fairly weakened Leeds side when Shepherd whips the ball in to the box and Stewart gets on to the end of it and heads it home past the keeper. Wood gets Leeds level shortly after half time when they counter and Wood gets on the end of a cross and tucks it home. Leeds go down to 10 men after a second yellow which spurred the boys on. Enobakhare gets our second extra time with a pile driver from the edge of the box. Leeds equalize again and again from a cross we couldn’t deal with and Erwin heads it home. We got the winner thanks to an own goal by Ayling after he heads it in to his own net from a Dowling ball in to the box.
A near impossible challenge in the next round as we go to West Brom of the Premier League.
Forest Green – Home – League – 14th V 21st
A dominant performance which started in the 5th minute when Robinson got his first for the club and our first of the game when he gets on the end of a Campbell-Young cross and volleys it past the keeper. Enobakhare gets our second not long before half time after a nice through ball from Robinson and cooly slots it home when being one v one with the keeper. Campbell-Young gets the third after some nice play and a one two with Enobakhare and tucks it home. Forest Green did get one back after a nice finish in the box but it wasn’t enough as Robinson gets his second when he gets on the end of a cross from Green.
Luton – Away – League – 12th V 3rd
Luton score the opener after we couldn’t clear a free kick. A poor performance from us this game and we never looked liked getting in to the game and Luton took advantage of that and got a second late on to secure the 3 points after some sloppy play from our defence.
Wycombe – Home – League – 11th V 12th
Wycombe get the opener just after 20 minutes from a free kick which Davies was never going to save. Green equalizes for us when we win a corner and Comley whips it in and Green gets on to it and heads home near post. A quieter second half with neither team having any serious chances to get the winner with the only action being Diallo getting his second yellow leaving us down to 10 men with half hour to go.
West Brom – Away – EFL Cup 2nd Round
A good performance overall from us this game against a strong West Brom side. We kept them at bay with them having little chances in the first half. West Brom went down to 10 men not long in to the second half which I thought would be our golden chance to progress and we looked like the team more likely to score until we went down to 10 men when Essam got a second yellow for a needless tackle which evened the game up again. We continued to look the better team in to extra time until we had another player sent off for a stupid tackle. Rondon scored in 119th minute to sucker punch us and knock us out of the cup.
I feel overall we have played some good football and we should of got more out of a couple of games like the Wycombe and West Brom games. We really put up a good fight against West Brom and we really should of won it if we could of took our chances. We sit mid table after 4 games which is okay. Most of our upcoming games are teams above and around us so hopefully we can pick up points and take points off the ones around us. I feel the squad is now strong enough to compete at this level and we have more than enough cover for positions. If the right player comes available then maybe one or two may come but I am happy with the squad.
Thanks for reading and I hope we can have a decent season! Hope you are enjoying it.
