January is here and that means we can hopefully we can bring in at least one new player to the club. With the season we have and the injuries we have had through out the season bringing in a player two is high on the list of things needed to get done to help fight for promotion.

One bit of positive news early in January was Kyle Dempsey returned from his loan spell at Peterborough. A player who I rate highly and was excited to get him back and a player who can and will provide a key contribution for us in the second half of the season.

We did manage to bring in two new faces, both loan deals till the end of the season. The first player to come in was Viktor Gyökeres from Brighton, a very talented player who can play up top or on either wing. Very happy to get this deal over the line. The second player we got in was Niall Ennis from Wolves. He is a pacey striker with lots of potential. A player who can make an impact with his pace and hopefully getting a goal or two!! Welcome to Fleetwood Viktor and Niall!

January

january

January was a strong month for us despite starting the month off with a defeat. We only lost one of our seven games which was against play-off hopefuls Shrewsbury. We smashed Rochdale 5-0 away from home with Ross Wallace getting himself a hat trick, it was also a showing of our quality. We did also manage to progress to the the Checkatrade Trophy semi finals after beating Bradford 5-0 and then beating Rochdale on penalties in the quarters.

We did lose James Husband for a month which was a big loss but Eddie Clarke stepped up and put in some big performances. Our finishing proved lethal this month with us scoring 3,4 and 5 goals in most of the games, Oxford were the only team to deny us scoring this month.

February

february

A fairly poor month from us which seen us only win 2 out of the 5 games we played which came against Bradford and Luton both in the league. A highlight of the results was beating a strong Luton side to cement our place at the top of the league. Charlton was a frustrating game with us being on top for majority of the game but Chong scored a brace in 4 minutes on 56 and 60 minutes to kill the game off and give them the three points.

Really disappointing to get knocked out of Checkatrade trophy by eventual winners Burton in the semis as we could of had a good chance of winning the trophy and had a trip to Wembley for the fans and players. It was a poor performance from us and Burton deserved it on the day, it didn’t help with them winning a penalty in the opening 15 minutes which Boyce tucked away in to the corner. A game which concluded a frustrating  month for us after a good little run we had been on over recent weeks.

youth intake

The annual youth intake came and went for us this season with a pretty poor at best selection of players this season. David Heaton was the best player by a mile and has a lot of potential he can fill and could become a good player. At 15 he has plenty of time to get better and in time a couple of loan moves will do him a world of good before maybe challenging for a first team spot at Fleetwood.

remaining games

We are still sitting pretty at the top but we still have 3 or 4 teams snapping at our heals. We have 12 games remaining against some big sides in this league as well as against other promotion hopefuls. I am fairly confident we can at least get a promotion spot secured with the games we have left. If we can beat the likes of Coventry, Sunderland and Barnsley then we should be on course to get the league won by taking points off the teams around us! Fingers crossed.

Losing to Burton in the semi finals still really frustrates me as that is a cup I felt we were fully capable of winning and bringing at least one piece of silverware back to Highbury Stadium this season. We move on and full focus is on the final months of the season and getting us over the line albeit champions, runners up or going to the play-offs. The pressure continues to build on us the longer we are fighting at the top of league, hopefully the lads can handle it and show me what they have got and give the fans something to cheer about along the way!
